Unusual Pieces

This hand drawn hearse or a 'bier' as it used to be known probably dates from around the 1870s, it had spent many years stood in a barn before it came to us for a very comprehensive restoration, we had to strip and gently sand blast all of the steel and iron components, and strip the timber frame down to its individual parts before we started to rebuild it, replacing pieces as required along the way. part of every wheel was too rusty to be saved so we had to replace part of each wheel before it could all be rebuilt, reglazed, and repainted.

This is a commemoration bench that we were asked to make for the family of a local young Cub Scout Leader who had passed away, his Scouting name was Baloo, hence the carving in the seat back. the ends were bound with heavy section stainless steel to prevent the 'arms' from splitting as the timber continues to dry over the next few years. this piece of oak weighed around 3 tons before the work started, we estimate that it will have weighed around 1.75 by the time we delivered it.
